Do tree sparrows eat pure suet?

| Recently, I notice a couple of tree sparrows eating the suet. I am pretty sure it was a tree sparrow and not a female house sparrow due to the markings and the single breast spot.
I thought these guys were seed eaters. They're eating pure suet?

The tree sparrows will indeed eat suet in the winter. I have tree sparrows, white-throated sparrows and song sparrows that will all eat the suet, though they eat more seeds than suet.

Yes, there's piles and piles of seeds nearby, but I guees suet is higher in calories. Paul

here has been a nasty winter with winds ans snow and below zero temps. mixed with some sunny cold days. When it's at it's worst the birds come in flocks and they eat almost everything, I have several cage suet trays and another tub of suet mix on a platform. Even the towhees and juncos and a few of the doves eat suet and suet mixes. I don't get many sparrows but they try the suet too. I rarely se a finch on the suet tray. the woodpeckers and the pesky starlings show up too. The sunny days most stay away but must be close by cause the next bad day they are back in numbers.

After reading up on them I realized that it's not so far-fetch after all. Tree sparrows eat mostly insects in the summer, but mostly plant in the winter, so they are not pure seed eaters (like doves) after all. Paul

Around here, I've noticed that the sparrows hardly ever go for the suet if there is seed available. I thought they would eat anything!

I don't know one sparrow from another but those who are eating at my suet feeder seem to prefer the droppings from the larger birds pecking at the suet block. At least I think it's suet since the ground is littered with little white specks. The sparrows do sometimes go up to the feeder but it doesn't seem to be their preference.
