Bluejay tossing seed problem

Posted by macybaby (My Page) on

I put a gallon of seed out this morning, and the 8 Jays came and have emptied the entire feeder already. I see them out there flicking the seed out to get at their favorites.

Is there any type of feeder I can use that will make it hard for those Jays to do this? BTW - I don't mind the jays at the feeder, just the waste they cause.

Thanks

I have one of those squirrel proof feeders. It really seems to deter tossing seed. It has a bunch of small holes where the seed is accessible, so the birds sort of have to pluck it out. Some seed still gets wasted. Birds are messy. But it does seem to cut down on the waste.

You can try switching to a feeder with small openings or one of the squirrel-proof feeders that has a spring-adjusted perch but you'd have to set it to close under the weight of the jays. That might eliminate other birds you don't mind at your feeder. You can also try modifying your existing feeder by placing wire mesh over the feed openings. Maybe a mesh with a 1/4" or 1/2" square to prevent the jays from shovelling the seed out.

Or switch from a mixed seed to a straight seed such as black-oil sunflower or safflower to avoid birds picking out their favorites. If you make a seed change do it gradually, otherwise the jays will still look for their favorites and dump everything else on the ground. If you start with a small amount of seed, there will be less waste and the jays and others will eventually figure out that it's all BOSS or all safflower.
