Carolina Wren abandonment of nest with eggs?

We were so excited when a Carolina Wren built a next in the artificial flower wreath on our front door several weeks ago. As of July 30th she had begun laying what turned out to be 4-5 eggs (it is difficult to see in well enough to determine number for sure). All seemed fine. We stopped using the front door as soon as we saw nesting-building activity, and posted a laminated sign nearby requesting anyone approaching back off and use back door. We were out of town Aug. 15-22 and hoped to return to fledgings after noting the typical incubation period. We returned 36 hrs. ago and have seen no sign of mother; eggs look fine in nest, and nest appears undisturbed, but we are worried. Our 9-year old daughter is particularly concerned and I am unsure what to tell her. :\

Because of the time frame, are you sure any that hatched didn't already fledge? I would count the eggs. It could be that none of them hatched, but maybe some did and fledged? If the eggs were fertile, they should have hatched weeks ago.
