Now I know why my new martins won't stay! I knew that we had a resident owl in our hay barn. Is Martin landlording out of the question here???

Just hope the Martins are not litigious : )

I have read that you can make a "box" out of the cheap fencing allowing the Martins to get in but that an Owl can not reach in. I had a Screech Owl reach in and Take a Woodpecker roosting in my Bluebird box :( Ya I know they gotta eat too.

If you search for Purple Martin Owl Guard, you'll come up with lots of ideas. I just have little vertical posts attached to my porches. But you can also use fencing or wire.

I am thinking that the Martins that were here and now gone, probably won't come back. I came home about 10:30 two nites in a row and the owl was perched up there.

This is interesting. I've been watching a live owl cam since February and haven't seen them bring in any juvenile birds for their owlets. Is there a history of owls pirating martin nests?

Owls can reach in and grab adults or nestlings. Deeper nest boxes (12" instead of 6" helps.
