A very moning experience

Hi everybody,
I just wanted to share an experience with you. A couple of days ago I was sitting out on my deck and a few feet away was an enormous spider web attached to the house. Out of the corner of my eye I saw what I thought was a leaf fluttering in the web. Doing a double take I saw that it was a little bird hopelessly entangled. He was hanging upside down with both feet and one wing firmly caught. The other wing was trying to fly. I got to work on him so fast I didn't even identify his species but he was about the size of a goldfinch but greyish in color, perhaps a wren. I proceeded to free one foot and had to pinch his little toes pretty firmly as the web was the strongest I'd ever encountered. By this time he was calm. I got the other foot free and again I hope I didn't hurt his fragile little toes. Then the wing ...got that free and went to stand him up and poof, away he went.
That was such a heart wrenching experience I get all teary eyed just thinking about it. I just hope he remembers me as the one that freed him and not the one who caused his demise.
Thanks for reading,
Richard Nordli

What a fabulous story! Thank you for sharing it with us, Richard, and for saving the little bird.
That must have been quite some spider web!

I would be worried if that spider decided to build even stronger webs. That must be one huge spider. Did you get to see it.Carry a big stick in case you do LOL

Thank you for sharing.

Without seeing a picture, I have no idea, but thought it could be a phoebe or gray gnatcatcher.

Wonderful to hear that the bird was calm while you extracted him (or her) from the web. I'm surprised it was calm, but it sure would feel good thinking it knew you were helping it.

Your story put a smile on my face.

Wow.......that was some spider web! Sounds like the kind you'd find in a jungle!
So glad you could help with the little birdie. Maybe a gnatcatcher or a kinglet?
