i planted several varietys of sunflowers this year for the birds abd the boss is getting ripe and the chickadees and blackbirds are really after the heads
Nice capture, I've noticed the golden finches can't wait for mine to ripen and keep checking them out. Unfortunatley, the plant is not in a a good area for photos. It was a volunteer plant thanks to the local chipmunks.
I planted safflower and zebra sunflowers last year, thinking they would be a nice winter snack and they goobled them up in early fall.
the chickadees here don't fly away when i go out. I walked out in the back yard and stood and watched them from about 5 foot awys busy eating. point and shoot camera with zoom. Our old family farm is about 100 miles from here and planted in safflower this year and harvst is usually in october. Wll drive over and save a busket of seeds for my birds.
I had a great crop of BOSS sunflowers one year. Apparently that particular batch of seed was very viable, because they sprouted all over below the feeders. The birds loved them! The Goldfinches, Chickadees, and Warblers ate the seed up as soon as they were ripe.
I tried to sprout some this year, but I don't think the seed in that bag was viable.
