omgosh i have baby tres!!

Remember the TRES that started laying eggs and then we got that week of very cold wet weather and she stopped at 3 eggs? I have been checking since to see if she would lay anymore eggs but she never laid any more than those 3. I knew she was in the box alot but she seemed mostly to be poking her head out most of the time, this past week we had really hot weather. Well today when I looked there were two baby TRES and one egg yet. I was so not expecting that. I wonder if that night on 5/12 when those three TRES spent the night in that box if she figured incubation would have started then and knew she couldn't lay anymore eggs. That would be 15 days ago which is about right. Well at least those eggs didn't go to waste, too bad she couldn't have added to them though but I am sure these three (if the third one hatches) will be very well taken care of.

Oh and my Dees have fledged today from the dead tree in the woods. I only saw the last one go. Sniff, sniff. I checked the nest and I didn't see any remaining egg so I am assuming all seven hatched and fledged, I had counted up to six babies in the nest once but it was so hard to see in I could have missed that one.

YEA! I know my gal TRES is incubating. I have not been able to see how many new eggs she laid. I never took the 2 old ones out. Your 3 were about as old as mine right? WOW I wonder if there is hope for them? I did wittness bird sex in the box a few times last week so I dont expect babies just yet. She has so many feathers in there (cause dad brings her a feather when he comes a calling for some nookey)LOL that I cant see , today I could barley see she was in there as she was covered with feathers. Congrats on the babies! These poor birds have had 2 tough years. I hope all goes well with them! Let us know if the 3rd hatches. Congrats on the Dees too!

Well I checked this morning and all 3 have hatched now. These eggs were laid on 5/6, 5/7 and 5/8. It really seems like incubation must have started on 5/12 when all those TRES roosted in the box for the night and the female must have known that which is why she didn't lay any more eggs. I will have to try to get a picture later today, they are so cute nestled in all the feathers.

That's an amazing story Donna. I'm so happy all three of the eggs hatched. I have a bit of a funny story about my TRES. They started laying right before the cold spell, and so they weren't around much. A HOWR destroyed their nest. They rebuilt and relayed. The other day she had three eggs in there, so I decided to check and see if she laid a fourth. I am rather short, and didn't feel like lugging out the step ladder, so I opened the box and gently placed my fingers in where the eggs should be. Boy if I didn't get a surprise! Instead of feeling the eggs, I felt momma TRES. She never budged. So I guess I will also be looking forward to three TRES babies.

Funny Kendra! I am short too, I use a small mirror when I do nestchecks. It is about an inch and a half wide by about three inches long and has a little handle on it. Not sure where I got it but I would be lost without it!!
