monitoring details

Hello,

I had 5 eggs but clearly only 4 babies. I hate to disturb the babies, but I worry there might be a dead chick or rotten egg under them. How should I handle this?
Thanks,

Ann

If an egg didn't hatch it will be fine in the nest. I have had that happen before and never took it out until after fledging. If there is a dead baby you would want to remove that for sure. If there was though you would smell it and have flies around. Just look real good when you monitor the box. HOw old are the babies?

Hi Ann. Unhatched eggs are not usually a problem. I have removed them and left them in. By the time I have waited 2 -3 days to be sure it's not going to hatch Mom has it tucked so far back in a corner I can't get to it without moving babies. If a baby dies in the first few days the parents can remove it. Like Donna said you will be able to smell it. Watch for ants and flys.

They're a week old or maybe a day or two more (I missed the actual hatch date so I'm not sure.) I dont' smell anything or see bugs, so I'm hopeful....

Thanks for the tips! I'll keep sniffing for a few more days and then stop worrying!!
