eggs have hatched and it's soooo hot!!!

| Summer in the South is here...in fact, it came in at full force a week or so ago and this week our temps are in the high 90s with no relief in sight. It's been so dry and no rain is forecast for at least the remainder of the week!
2 eggs hatched yesterday but I don't know about the other 3. I will check when Mama Blue takes a break, but I am concerned about the heat. This year's second nesting is a little later than last year's, so it would put fledging around 7/3 or so. Are the nestlings in danger when it's this hot?? I have 3 bird baths, keep the water fresh, but it's strange that I've never seen Mama or any other blue, come to bathe or drink.
It's only mid June so I hate to think about July and August! Would any of you "northern" bluebirders like to have a houseguest for awhile??? LOL!

Donot worry.I have had Bluebirds that hatched in 85 degree weather in OH.Their bodies are able to adjust to the outside temperatures provided that is not too extreme.What you have to woory about is food supply and HOSPs.If you have a sparrow spooker up and if you can supplement with some meal worms,they should be fine.

| Donna, isin't it amazing all the worries our Blues bring us? The first nesting we worry about cold the second we worry about hot! We worry about HOSPS HOWRs etc. I have found you can safely take and "icee" PACK...BLUE ICE..AND PUT IT on TOP of the house..meaning the outside on the roof. Put a light colored towel over it. I did this with a thermom a few years back and it lowered the inside temp a few % over about an hour. We have all done things to keep the heat off. Does anybody have the fun pic of the big yellow smiley umbrella from a few years back? We do such crazy things! You will be seeing all sorts of stuff show up in the next few weeks, tin foil, styrafome...you name it we try it..I like the icee with a towel because it is slow and you can remove it with ease. I think we do these thing more for our comfort...as long as the box is vented and is not facing the sun all day they are usually just fine. |
