More help needed on fledgling day. I've seen a couple fledglings flying around. Can only see when the flap in the back wooded area the little bits of blue. We got rid of the dead baby in the box and can't see anything wrong with him but then the kids came up and said they found a baby that can't fly. His wings seem fine and no damage on the bird and he can grasp good to my hands (and bowels working fine too). He started to fall asleep while hubby was holding him and me trying to figure out what to do with him so we put him back in the box. I can hear him in there giving a little chirp every now and then but haven't seen him trying to poke his head out at all. Mom and foster dad are nowhere to be found right now. I'm hoping just one more day in the box and he'll muster up some strength to fly. When I call the bird care center the recording sayd to put baby back where you found it but it is too vulerable to the stray cats in the area.

I think you made the best desision, Mom should hear the peeping. I would check first thing to see if she is coming to the box. Sounds like you have a rehabber lined up if need be. Little birdy prayers.

Baby did not make it. He was still in the box and died either last night or overnight. I don't know why these last 2 babies died. I don't know that I have the right heart for putting the box up again. Why so healthy one day and 2 die on fledging day? I guess I should have expected him not to make it, I don't know but I was hoping another day in the box he would build up strength. I hope the other 3 are doing well with mom and step-dad.

Im so sorry to hear this. Hosting nest boxes can sometimes be heartbreaking, but the rewards are worth it. It sounds like poisioning. Has someone in your imediate area recently sprayed for bugs/weeds? Sadly many people are more concerned with perfectly groomed lawns and gardens than they are about birds and wildlife. Try to find the source. (probabaly the neighbor with the nicest yard)or any comercial buildings. At least you will know what you are dealing with before you decide if you should continue. Good Luck

I too think it was poisoning. I am looking around for the other 3 babies hoping they somehow didn't get the bad food from mom or dad. Mom and the "stepdad" are checking out the box again but no sign of babies yesterday or today so far. This is one hunka bluebird she found in her new mate. He is huge!!!

Had a thought.....it is graduation time, my Sister in law was having an outdoor party for her Daughter, they were going to spray their yard for bugs, luckily I was able to convince her it would most likely kill the baby robins she has in a nest in the bushes along her driveway. Had any parties around there lately?
