Weening

Next to seeing the parents chase the youngsters away the hardest thing for me to watch is when the parents stop feeding the fledglings. Anyone who feeds mealworms has seen it. Imagine how difficult it must be for the fledgling to understand, when the bill that has always fed you is suddenly poked right into your face. But it is nature's way. They survive it so I guess I can.

Here are a couple of pictures. The first two are from last year and the year before. The last two were taken yesterday.

RE: Weening

Great shots Dave, like usual. There was only one year that I actually saw the dad chase the babies away. Last year I had thought we lost on of the first nesting fledglings but apparently the Dad chased him away (he was the only male in the first nesting) and let the females stay for the second nesting. Once the second nesting fledged, the male from the first nesting was allowed to return. All eight (four in each nesting) stayed until late Oct when all 10 left for a warmer climate. Luckily as far as I have seen our adults just stop feeding and ignore the fledglings once they can feed each other on their own, I never saw them being attacked for begging.
