 o
food for bluebirds??

hi, I saw a bag of song bird food at a store the other day.
It showed a bluebird on it, as well as other birds. Will bluebirds eat any type of seed, or just the mealworms? I've read about the suet you can also make for them. Thank you
in advance.

In instances of cold weather, when insects and berries are scarce, bluebirds will sometimes eat sunflower and other seeds along with nuts and suet. Be careful of the songbird seed mixtures you buy, however, because many of them contain "JUNK" seed that attracts house sparrows. I usually purchase black oil sunflower seeds, a fruit and nut mixture and sunflower hearts and mix these together. Read the list of ingredients on the bag and be sure that millet and corn are not listed as these are favorites of house sparrows.
There are recipes for suet mixtures, including the Bluebird Banquet recipe, listed on the www.sialis.org web site.

Bluebirds will eat hulled sunflower seeds, fruit and suet. There is a product called bluebird nuggets which is made from suit, raisins and ground peanuts.

Bluebirds will eat all of these products but generally, only if they can't find any bugs. Winter time in Michigan the Bluebirds that stay over will come to feeding stations when they can't find berries.
