Mr Blue finally found another mate!

Wow, you would think after losing 2-3 mates a bluebird wouldn't be able to find any more.

Mr single dad blue fledged 4 babies all by himself. He continued feeding until they got bigger and just a few days ago I saw him perched near another adult bluebird - a female bluebird! On last check, the babies could fly well and find their own food but were still being fed.

I saw both the female and male today. No calling coming from the trees. They were just spread out feeding themselves. Hmm...maybe the young ones are on their own? Maybe they will make another attempt? Seems far fetched but very possible.

The determination of these birds is absolutely astounding. I hope your papa and his new gal made another attempt. Any updates?

Yes actually I do have an update. Although very much late!

Mom helped Pop with taking care of his brood and they never made another attempt. (I would have enjoyed it, but I had my doubts)

I was out today and I heard that typical single note bluebird call! They're out there some where!

lol I heard a HOSP coming from the direction of a pair of nestboxes...thought I had to bring the Van Ert out...in September! It was actually farther off.

In previous years I've had flocks of blues in the fall check out my boxes so now I'll have to be on the lookout!

Honestly, late summer/early fall is a great time to trap house sparrows especially if you have a repeating ground trap. Granted, you're trapping mostly juvies, but those are next year's breeding adults.
Hope the blues continue to check out your boxes and remember them for next spring.
