no bluebirds for 5 days! they were nesting

momma bird made herself at home and dad was visiting her on a regular basis. then, nothing!

could the heat have killed momma? what about the nest? what reason would they have to stop being present?

should we check the nest? if there are eggs, does that mean they are abandoned? or is momma just laying low inside the box?

it has been so hot here and the nest is not shaded all day. did we kill the birds?

thank you

Kathy. Could be many things but the first thing that comes to mind is it is normal behavior for them to wait a few days to over a week after a nest is complete before they lay eggs. Go check the box, If you have HOSPs or House Wrens there may be bad news in there, but the heat would not kill a female on eggs, she would not need to incubate much, just sneak in and turn the eggs. Let us know what you find when you check the box and we will go from there. ALSO if you have not already read....www.sialis.org for lots of info.

thank you! we checked the nest and there is one egg in there.

i wasn't sure if the heat could kill or ruin the egg.

we haven't seen her in 5 days. would she leave her egg that long or is it more likely that she deserted it?

thank you!

That egg may be her 1st one, she may be just starting to lay eggs. Can you get some shade up now that there is an egg? Check tomorrow for egg #2 and let us know.
