Cats versus birds

I have read somewhere that if there are cats roaming the neighborhood that the birds will move on to a safer location. Is this true? I have seen a few stray cats around this past year and my bluebirds have not nested in my boxes this past year. I have heard the blues singing over on the next street though. I'm mad and I always chase the cats away when I see them.

I use stovepipe baffles on my Bluebird feeder and on the nest boxes. I have had a neighbor's cat try to get at nesting birds, but the baffle prevented it from doing so, and it eventually gave up. I'd bet that the next street over also has loose cats. At least around here, they're down every street. Do you have trees or bushes with berries to attract the Bluebirds? You could also try offering them suet and/or mealworms. That will usually bring them in. Just make sure to put the food in a safe place so that cats cannot harm the Bluebirds.

Cats are very deadly to bluebirds at any time of the year not just at nesting time
When they see them jump to the ground to feed Its like a time bomb went off
and they will not stop until they get there meal. Any farm with barn cats
you must remove nest box's you are setting the bluebirds up to be killed. Over the years i have studied nest box placement around barns and always wondered
why the next box failed I was feeding the barn cats my bluebirds sadly I learned
from my mistake and feel it advice that should be passed on that way no other
bluebirds turn up missing for all of you!

RE: Cats versus birds

I know this is an older post , but I have people around my neighborhood that feed strays and don't take care of them when they get sick. Makes me sick. They come and walk all over my car and spray their "scent" on my car that I get a nice whiff of all day driving.

I just found this on the internet and I am definitely buying 2 when the income tax check gets here because they only go 20 feet. Thought I would share.
