 o
Finally!!!

They're back! I haven't seen a bluebird in my Atlanta area yard since May. I was just thinking about them this morning and a short while ago I glanced outside and saw 4 of them flying around. Off to get some mealworms!

I've often read posts where people say that their pair is back, sometimes with some of their offspring. How do you know it's the same pair you had in the Spring? Do Bluebirds always return to the same nest site? The Blues in my house from the Spring had 2 broods, is it probable that the Blues I'm seeing today are the same?

Thanks for your response!

RE: Finally!!!

You can tell by behaviors, they may have a favorite perch, come for worms at a certain time, come when you whistle. One gal on here has a male that lines poop sacks up on her deck railings. I had a female that always refused to feed her babies after day 11 and insisted that the male take over until they fledged. If you put worms out and they come right to them you can pretty much figure they are your same pair with babies.

Lisa11310 - Thank you for your response. That is very interesting ... funny about the poop sacks.
It was cold today, in the low 40s, high 30s,and getting into the mid 20s tonight, (cold for Atlanta). I put out two bowls of mealworms, one where I usually put them and one right underneath the suet cage that they seem to be so interested in. Not a bite! They were foraging around in the leaves all around the bowl but no interest in the worms. I'll try again tomorrow but it seems strange. I did have a Goldfinch come for a worm or two.
Anyway, I have lots of suet out which is what they seem to be most interested in.
I also lined the bottom of the Bluehouse with Alpaca wool and put the spool out in case anyone was interested. The titmice were very interested.

RE: Finally!!!

It is so exciting that you have the Bluebirds back. Are you sure it was an American Goldfinch that came for the mealworms though? They are pretty strict about their diet, and do not normally consume insects. Maybe you have some kind of warbler? So far I have not seen the Bluebirds in my yard this winter, but I'm ready for them. I am filling their feeder with mealworms daily, but so far only Tufted Titmice have taken advantage of them.

RE: Finally!!!

I guess it could have been a migrating Warbler that got a mealworm. I'll try to get a better look if I see another one.
I saw a couple of Blues today but no interest in the worms. I have tons of Tufted Titmice but they have no interest in the worms either. Nor the Wrens.
The loney worms have been hanging out in their little bowl all day with birds flying all around them.
Lots of action at the suet and peanut feeders. I'll keep putting the worms out daily, hopefully they will find them.
