hot showers while remote/wilderness camping

| Every summer we go out for a week at a remote wilderness campsite. We don't hike in but go by boat. We take our tents, kids, dog, cooking gear/food and tow the kayaks thirteen miles from the main camp. Our nearest neighbor is at least a mile away and there are no houses or roads. We see a lot of loons, eagles, and moose. I always say I could stay forever if there was no need to shower. I considered purchasing one of those hot water on demand systems just for that week. If it's hot the sun shower works great but the weather usually doesn't cooperate! Most years I just take environmentally friendly soap and jump in the lake! The problem with that is I hate cold water!
Last year I found a solution that works great and doesn't take up a lot of space. My sunshower is huge as it's the biggest one I could get but folds up small. I put some water in the sun shower that was straight from the lake. Then I heated some on the stove for awhile and poured that into the sun shower. I hung it from a tree and it was perfect! It was hot and there was enough water for everybody! I still used environmentally friendly soap (Dr. Bronner's) but what I luxury! It was near the fire and the area is so isolated that I only needed to hang a tarp on the windy lake side! It was the perfect way to end a day of kayaking and camping at our beautiful lakeside wilderness site! |

| Hi Jen - well, I picked-up one of those Coleman "sun shower" outfits a couple of years ago with the idea of using it on a long cross country trip maybe, but have not to date put it to use (it's presently carried in one of the popup camper's storage compartments). So far I've managed to plan my camping in areas to where I can access a hot shower from time to time. One place, for example, when remote camping in a national forest there is not too far away a county run campground that has bath facilities and for a couple of dollars you can use these facilities. So in between trips to take advantage of those hot showers I fall back onto the old military taught daily bathing technique of washing out of a helmet, only now I use a 5/gal bucket! But looking for an excuse to try that "hang in a tree" Coleman sun shower rig to see how it works ... I just seem to forget about it. I'll remember that adding a little warm water to it trick - maybe I'll get to try it this season. Dale |

A friend of mine installed one of the car-topper luggage bins on top of his old travel trailer, then he put a large plastic water container in it, filled it at home, and when he got to camp, he had hot water all ready for his next shower! This only works good if ya park in the sun! Great for desert camping, but i would think all of your water would be hot out there! I bought a coach with a shower/ tub combination. My wife likes showers, but, if i want to take a shower, i have to remove my wooden leg, which spells DANGER!! So, i use the tub! When we went to Daytona beach on our honeymoon, i could walk to the waters edge, but couldn't wade! If i took off my leg, i couldn't walk to the water! RATS! And, you can bet i'd look goofy crawling across 50-60 feet of beach to get into the water! I haven't let my wood leg get in the way of anything else! I do anything i want to, including riding my motorcycle! Some wag asked my why do i ride a motorcycle with a wooden leg! I told him it would be impossible to ride without it! Any way, get out in the snow!! build a snow man, get the kids out in it--it'll be gone soon, and then you'll have to be getting the camping deal in order! by: Rustyj |

| This is my first post on the forum so I though I should get my feet wet on this camping shower thread. I have been checking out the forum for the last few weeks and I sure came across lots of great ideas and tips. Anyway back to the shower topic. My wife and I spend a lot of time tent camping from spring to late fall. We spent 3 months in our tent last year. I'm one of those people that need a shower everyday, 2 days max, this was the only thing that got in the way of our extented camping trips. Three years ago I bought a Zodi 2 burner unit and a shower tent. I have been satified with this product. Take a look at one of these Zodi units they might meet your needs. I think they have a website . |

Great idea, Jen! I think if I hung a shower bag out here in the Mojave, it would melt... ha ha ha.... I usually am very glad ahhh... to get cool water to wash off in. This one area I camp in every July in Lake Meade, Nevada wilderness area, is landlocked. three miles long, no people, no boats, just me and whoever I can talk into camping with me and wild burros. The water is like bath water. I think this year, I will actually measure the temperature and post it. |
