Camping on Maui or Hawaii?

| Hello. I was wondering if anyone out there has had experience camping on either Maui or Hawaii? My DH and I are going to Oahu in March to visit friends and want to go to another island for 4 or 5 days but would like to camp. We honeymooned on Kauai about 6 years ago and had a great time camping, especially on the beaches away from the touristy areas (in state and county parks that allowed camping).
But, we have friends that said they didn't have a lot of success camping on either Hawaii or Oahu. They said they felt like it was unsafe or unpleasant (and they are experienced campers like us). I have done a bit of online research, and have found lists of parks that allow camping, but it is hard to tell from these web sites if the experience would be a good one or not, or which sites would be the best bets.
Any thoughts? Also, any thoughts on which island to go to (Maui or Hawaii)?
Thanks ahead of time! Bella |

| Bella, IMHO, either island will be a pleasant experience. As long as you're coming from a US state en route, you are blessed by our forefathers with the 2nd Amendment. A proper firearm in either your daypack, tent, or car lockbox will go a long way in ensuring good neighbors and happy camping. Our experiences in Oahu are not unlike those others on this thread, the homeless are suspiciously welcommed in Hawa'ii, but they seem to stay to themselves and not raise much of a racket (compared to our SoCal tweakers, got bless 'em!) but we sleep a lot better with the P4 between us! |
