Seeking good, but inexpensive, air mattress
| | |
Posted by Shirley (My Page) on Tue, Mar 22, 05 at 11:48
| I am looking for an air mattress that I can use either in the back of my van or in the tent. Something that can be inflated and deflated quickly. Something dependable, but not expensive. Any recommendations? |

| Shirley - you don't say what size, so I'm assuming you mean a single, and there's such an air mattress glut on the market today. Unless your looking for some specialized type, I would think anyplace from Wal-Mart to Cabelas would have something you could use. Another thing, do want the self-inflating or do you want to handle that task yourself? I have two - one that's smaller and rolls up tight (Iron Mountain brand) and I use this one where size and weight matter. Primarily I use it for my down river overnight canoe trips. The other one is larger (self-inflating) that I use when I'm tent camping, using the truck, where comfort counts, and where I have plenty of cargo space; this one is a Wenzel brand. Of course, the Wenzel is by far the more comfortable, but it takes some work to deflate (roll, sit on it, roll some more, sit, roll some more, sit, ect, ect) and get it rolled back up. And when rolled up the roll size is over double that of the Iron Mountain pad. However, strange as it may seem, the Wenzel was the least expensive; I think it was something like $24.95 at Sam's Club. | I've found the self-inflating pads (I've been using 2" thick full length Thermarest pads) to be much more comfortable than the air mattresses I used to use. I find rolling them back up pretty easy. I do a careless job rolling them up with my knees on them, close the valve, unroll them, then roll them most of the way back up, open the valve again and finish rolling the last of the air out. By the second time I've got them very well deflated without hardly trying. Campmor usually has something like this with slight cosmetic imperfections at large discounts. Right now they have the 47609 Therm-a-Rest Backpacker Self-Inflating Mattress$39.97. It's not quite 2" thick, but I've just picked up a pair of Guidelite 1 1/2" mattresses and tried them at home only. I think they'll be fine, and the mattress above is halfway between the two versions I have. Campmor also has a "Hot Deal" on their own brand at $25 for a 1 1/2" pad, their item # 48577. This is half its usual price. |

| Thanks Dale and Brian for your suggestions! I am definitely thinking of the self-inflating kind. I am somewhat familiar with Wenzel and have heard of Campmore, so will looking into those suggestions. I really appreciate these leads! |

| I bought one of those "self-inflating" pads for $40.00. Didn't impress me much. I took it back and bought a small, inflatable "pool" mattress. Cost me $6.00 and took up less space, was wider than the self-inflating "mat" and worked beautifully!!! To me the self inflating mats are over-priced and over-rated. Those REAL inflating beds that work with air pumps are nice but they 1)are heavier, 2)will take up a LOT more room and 3)will be colder in that you won't have the insulation (like sleeping on a water bed) being as you are that far from the ground. If you're headed to a warm area - not to worry. |

If your sleeping in a van, or a pickem up with a cap, the things to use are those long porch swing or glider cushions! They don't give the hassle of inflating/deflating an air mattress, other stuff can be piled on top if them for travelling, and when they get to looking bad, just toss them, then ride around on trash night, and get a new set, or one, as you desire! there is always somebody tossing perfectly good ones out, because they don't match their decor, or aren't the right color. A good thing is--they don't lose their air when the night is half gone, which requires that you get out and pump it up again, to sleep until it goes down again! Oh, if you don't like to pick one up that way--just go down and buy a new one! Get a color that doesn't show the dirt! I've used them at times, and they work well. And my old bones didn't hurt the next morning! |
