Freaky thing, female beetle neoteny?

So here I was, walkin' along, when I see this weird thing on a wooden pole thing.

No, I didn't decapitate it. When I first saw it it had a whitish... head thing... sticking out, it moved almost like a tongue or something. I think I may have seen eyes, but I'm not sure... then I was about to take a picture and it vanished. Obviously it somehow tucked it's head in or something... freaky i'm telling you!

bad picture, but note the legs and the tail end. It walked on the legs and with the tail end it uh... kind of follwed along if you know what I mean...

Yes, I did turn it rightside up when I left. In that position it reminds me of a lightning bug, maybe it's one of those neotenous females? (neoteny is when adults evolve to retain baby characteristics)
also note the head end, that slit thing is where it hid it's head.
