There were three in one tree, all curled up like that. I looked but can't find the species.

Alpha, I can't see your image, the URL is extremely long with special characters in it, it looks encrypted!

There are several possibilities for this "inverse" type ladybug, I see them every year, but not as often as the red ones.

Try Twice-stabbed lady beetle
(note the white dots are reflections, not part of the beetle)

There are also melanic versions of ladybugs we commonly recognize.

YEP! that's it!

A melanistic version wouldn't really make sense since there were three of them.... unless some sympatric speciation is going on and the melanistic ones stick with each other...

Right. And tonight I'm using a newer browser, pix show up fine, thanks for reposting, though.

It is the twice-stabbed; the beetle pictured in the "what's that bug" link was another species with white on the thorax.

Oh no it wasn't your browser. when I first came here (and heck, even right now) there were red Xs. MSN is having some issues.
