 o
bug id

Does anyone have an idea what a dark brown hard shelled elongated oval "bug" might be - shell looks layered at pointed end and smooth at rounded end -sort of like a jewelry bead. About 3/4" long. Found Zone 6, in shallow soil at edge of bed. I wonder if it might be a chryalis (?sp) - if so of what? Any help would be appreciated.

What's your bed doing near shallow soil? Better let Larry handle this one. :)

Rather, what is shallow soil doing next to the bed?

Although the pupa is small and brown, it will not likely become a moth, so I'm stumped.

Without more info, mrsblossom, you guess so far is as good as anyone's. Put the chrysalis with some soil in a small container, plant the chrysalis at the same depth as found, put air holes in the container, place all in the ground near where you found it, and wait to see what hatches. Cover the container so the sun does not cook it.
