Is this a black widow?

| This spider is lurking outside our store. It seems to have a red hour-glass on it's belly, but it doesn't strike me as black enough to be a black widow. |

| I believe that you have a brown widow. In some parts of the country, they are quite common. It's always helpful, when asking for a pest ID, to let us know in which part of the world you live. |

| Hi--being a fl moose, I'm wondering if you're originally from up north (read "moose"). I'm from Upstate NY. I'm at war with brown widows. If you have one in the shed, you'll probably have a lot more in their other hiding places. Look for a spherical egg case with spikes all over it (like a short-haired porcupine). The spiders hang out under and inside the mailbox, under the edge of trash cans, under the handles, ditto for recycling bins, the steps on a ladder, window ledges, door frames, and yesterday the one that prompted a run for the insect powder and spider spray was poised under the valve-thingy of the swimming pool filter. Most people say they're more shy than black widows but when they do bite it's usually when someone accidentally squeezes them against their hiding place--like the trash can handle, etc. Insecticidal powder on their webs is the best approach; when the spider eats the web to recycle it, the spider dies. It's more specific to the target than sprays, and lasts longer. HOWEVER, since the pool repair guy is supposed to come, this girl got double treatment, for her and any of her friends and family. |
