Hi, This creature plays dead when you bug it. Was just wondering what it is. It's about 1" long. We're in N.E. Calif., Sierras. Thanks for any info. Peg

it is one of the buprestid beetles. I'm not familiar with the California species. Buprestids are wood borers and some species are quite destructive. Many of them are very beautiful as well.

ha ha.

House spiders will do the same thing but often times they won't do it for long. They do look dead though for as long as they are playing possum.
