Spider ID

Curious what this guy (or gal, perhaps) is:

Sorry I don't have a good idea of the scale--it was big but not huge. We have problems with widow spiders around here and occasionally have a 5 year old around, so I gave it and the area a dusting with diatomaceous earth. Does that actually do anything?

I'm in Northern California, near San Jose.

It might be a "false black widow" Similar in appearance to the black widow but without the distinctive red hourglass, and also not deadly poisonous.
