What would lay this egg on container soil?

I had several little seed-starting pots on a table outside. Something laid one or two eggs in each of them, and I'm wondering what it was. Before I realized they were eggs, I assumed they were part of the potting mix, and accidentally destroyed them. Therefore, I'm hoping I didn't kill off something beneficial (or cute).

Here's a picture of one of them. Close up, it looks a little dented. But otherwise they look perfect round, and about 1/8" in diameter. They are solitary, laid one at a time.

Thanks for your help!

Looks like Osmocote prills after they have absorbed their full quota of water and are about to burst. That would be my first 'guess'. ;-)

Here is a link that might be useful: For comparison.

Yup, looks like Osmocote (timed release fertilizer) to me .
