I recently lost a tree, flowering plum, in my front yard. It died suddenly one section at a time. Finally it just went and never grew again. Now, a few weeks ago I ripped the tree out and placed it on the curb but I always wanted to know what killed it. So I went to it's lifeless wooden body laying in the street to give it a little autopsy. I found holes in the trunk, along with splitting along the whole tree. I pulled back the bark and found about 10 of these grubs. Now, I'm not the best at taking pictures but here they go.

It is some type of flatheaded borer. Pretty common pest in all sorts of trees.
