Can you tell me what this is?

It's very strong and flips about like a snake. It's about 2 1/2 inches long.

It has a cyclops eye and a strong mouth which is very scary. And it has legs on its pinkish underside.

Thanks!

Oh, and is it harmful, or helpful?

It's a caterpillar but don't know which one. The folks in the Butterfly forum can probably help.

By the way, it looks like the cyclops eye is actually on the top of the butt end. A cool disguise.

I think it is an Achemon sphinx caterpillar, Eumorpha achemon - try that on BugGuide or some such and see if it doesn't work.

Not the Achemon, but probably one of the color phases of Abbot's Sphinx. That 'cyclops eye' takes the place of the usual horn that is carried by most hornworms. Way cool!
