LOUD electric buzzing. Stops.Starts.Stops.Starts...

What is it? I'm in Eugene, Oregon. I am interested in knowing what it is that is lurking and buzzing in the trees and shrubs. It is a very loud electric kind of buzz I hear during the day. It starts suddenly and stops suddently. There are trees, shrubs and ponds in my yard.

I'm pretty sure you're hearing one of these. The length and pitch of the buzzes would depend on species, temperature, time of day/night, season.

We don't have the massive cicada emergences out here in Oregon like those back East, but they are around.

I have collected them at the Clackamas River, and just today noticed a dried, damaged one in Mt. Scott Park in Portland, about 100 miles north of Eugene, so they are even in large metropolitan areas.
