black/brown striped caterpillar

I found this guy munching on my potted mesclun greens one morning. I put him in a container because I didn't have the hear to kill him. Within days he pupated to something that resembled a brown kidney bean.

I live in NYC. My potting soil was bought in PA.

Any ideas what kind of caterpillar/moth he is?

Looks like an armyworm, to me...one of the cutworms. the adult is a small, tannish-brown moth. They can do a lot of damage.

Caterpillars can be 'recycled' if you don't want to squish or flush. Birds LOVE them. ;-)
