Holes in yard

I have a lot of holes in my front lawn that are about the size of a quarter. They are so deep that I cant see the bottom and some actually make a slight turn. Very little dirt noticed around the actual hole itself. The holes are spaced about a foot apart also.
Is this an insect making these holes?.... There is no noticable mole damage on the surrounding areas....

Thanks
Crystal (in central Georgia)

Perhaps voles.

It's the right time of year for some species of June beetles, Japanese beetles and their other scarab kin to emerge. The white grubs you find in your yard, garden and compost pile are the larvae of these beetles. Have you seen any large beetles flying around lights or into backlit windows in your area?

Here is a link that might be useful: white grub info.
