A spider question

I know they're not insects but... I wanted to know why they bite people when they're sleeping. We're too big to eat or pose any threat.

RE: A spider question

According to what entomologists tell me, no one can say it's a spider bite unless they catch the spider in the act.

Who says spiders bite people when they are sleeping? I've never heard that one.

But many spiders are nocturnal.

RE: A spider question

If spiders get under the covers, when a human moves it is considered a threat and the teeth come out. In my house I have no doubt that there are spiders everywhere because I see them in lots of places. And even the tiny ones can bite- I watched one on my arm once and he let me have it. One time I put an afghan over my lap as I watched TV- it had been unused, on a chair for months. I had bites over my legs which I blamed on little spiders- we don't have chiggers here.

It was said: "And even the tiny ones can bite"

Maybe so. But, again, entomologists tell me that spiders are seldom able to pierce human skin.

In my experience, it is always assumed that it "must have been" a spider. I agree, the tiny ones don't have big enough fangs to penetrate the epidermis.

A spider could also appear to be trying to bite when it is just trying to lap up moisture from the skin.

There are more things that suck blood for a living than most of us are familiar with.

I say they bite. Especially when I when I have a scar from it that happened when I was sleeping. Their bite dissolves tissue and creates a white scar.

RE: A spider question

I pulled my ladder, aluminum out from beside the house to start painting. A lot of little white spiders ran all over, i kind of ran a rag over the rungs in a hurry & went up the ladder. reached down to get my wet cloth & little spiders ran all over & several on me. I felt them bite & started turning red & swelling (allergic to bees & even tiny ant bite me while I was washing a window & I killed it-arm swelled up enough so had to take benadryl) well same with the all white, cream colored I guess is better, friend had given me boxes of stuff from China & most still sealed up, I had taken them from trunk of car to backyard, both the white/cream spiders & red spiders came out of the boxes. I thought I better spray but some had run off. The little cream ones do get regular size. As I have spotted larger ones out there. I had not cleaned out the inside of the ladder rungs & they hid in there & came out for the moisture in my rag & so bit me. So we are getting new critters in our country from China & other countries. Don't know if red ones cause a problem or not. I have lot of black widows with the nice red spot. Never had a problem with them.
