| Hi.. I have 100s of really large bees in my yard this year - they are over an inch long and fat - and somewhat orange-ish. I think they are bees as they seem to hang around the flowers. recently then i noticed an increasing number of mounds of sand in middle of the grass.. I have seen discussions of sand bees - but they mention that they are small these bees are HUGE! Does anyone know what they are? Should I leavae them "be" |

| Sounds like it could be the Cicada Killer wasp. It would help to know where you are located. Cicada Killer females make many individual nesting sites in the soil then go off to hunt their prey, a juicy cicada. The cicada is paralyzed with a sting and stuffed into the nesting chamber where an egg is laid. The adult wasps feed on nectar and other plant juices, which is why you see them near flowers. The male wasps appear pretty aggressive, but it's all show. It's very amusing to badger them. They can't sting. The BIG ones are the females and they are not particular interested in defending their nests and are loath to sting. I am the only person I know of to have ever been stung by one of these things and it was only because I was running around outside with no shoes on. She stung me just to get me the heck off of her! The sting is pretty much as bad as you would think it would be from a insect that big. But, as I've said before, I only screamed for a few hours. As far as doing something about them...only if they are causing problems with the grass. Sounds like it might be a bit of a hazard to mow. |
