Big red caterpillar...need ID please

This fella was climbing around in a container that was going to be dumped in the compost heap. The kids and I saved him (without actually touching him) and I hope that someone can ID him for me. We see maybe one or two per year and I'd like to know what it'll become (moth or butterfly) and if they're "dangerous" at all. Thanks!

Your cat is unusually reddish but is similar to the "Imperial Moth" larva. Not dangerous. The caterpillars feed on a variety of large trees.
