What the heck is this thing?!

Found this little critter today while helping my son catch insects for a school project. It was attached to the top side of a sweet gum tree leaf and I have never seen one before and I'm not even sure if it classifies as an insect. Anyone know what it is?

First off, I'm sorry the image is so large! and secondly, I forgot to mention that I am in east central Georgia.

Does this thing jump, run, fly, or move around in some other way? If you can catch it, I'd like to see another image from a different angle. I have a feeling that this might not be a good shot of this critter.

I think it is a slug caterpillar, family Limacodidae, although I can't take if farther than that. Good luck!

Thanks tucker sp! I did a google search on slug caterpillar and wallah! It's a Skiff Moth Caterpillar! Here is a link to better pictures if anyone is interested.
