Who made this leafy cigar?

I found two of these "cases" while cleaning windows today. They were tucked up under the lips of casement windows on the exterior, second floor. It appears to be empty, open at one end and made of small bits of leaves.

| Oops...forgot to say that I live in central VA. |

| That's the home of a bagworm caterpillar. They usually attach these abodes onto their host plant, but will wander around upon occasion. I've got some pictures of building bagworms somewhere in my collection. Remove and destroy any that you may find. Inside those little cigars can be a few hundred eggs. |

Yikes! I better get it out of my kitchen. How does a caterpillar get all those little leaf bits up under a window on the second floor of a house, with no over hanging trees? Or is it the moth that builds this structure? |

| The caterpillar does it. How? One step at a time. :-) |
