Asp or puss caterpillar?? Or what?

Can anyone give me an ID on this? Haven't been able to find any photo like it on the net.

It's about 3/8" long...a peachy beige in color - and extremely hairy.

Found it on my tangerine tree...zone 9...deep south tip of Texas.

Yes, I would say you have the flannel moth caterpillar. At first, I was hesitant since the 'coiffure' on yours looked different than the puss caterpillars I am familiar with. But I found several images on the web that matched up to yours.

You know that these have a very painful and venomous sting, right? Of all of the stinging caterpillars, this is the one that will send non allergic people to the ER due to anaphylactic shock and other symptoms. Usually, the venomous spines are located along the back, right where you would want to 'pet' them.

Here is a link that might be useful: Puss caterpillar

Rhizo,

Thank you for that great photo link! I couldn't find any with a 'coiffure' such as the one I photographed. This confirms my suspicions. I have two of those that I found on my citrus tree...they are in a plastic disposable container. They will meet their maker now.

And yes, I realize how painful their sting is. I was trimming my trees last year and when I went to gather up the branches for trash collection one got smushed against my bare forearm. I wiped my arm against my side to wipe it off and those spiny hairs penetrated my shirt and zapped my stomach. OOOOOOOOOOOHHHH!!! Any place those hairs got on felt like it was on fire!

I had read about those buggers and grabbed some tape to gather up as many of those spiny hairs as possible. I don't have any allergies so I kept the area covered with calamine lotion to ease the burning sensation. I got so sleepy and my head felt so heavy...whatever toxin those things carry knocked me out for close to sixteen hours.

Nope, I don't want to tangle with one of them ever again!
