A strange new Bug to us

Ok. I just found this bug on one of our basil plants a moment ago. Anyone know it? What does it do, ehat does it prey upon. Really cool looking I must say! I wonder what an outfit like that would cost in the shops!
Anyway am also going to the insect forum to get more help, as well.
Thank so.

What a spectacular colour combination. Only Nature can get away with this one!

That's the locust borer (beetle). I think they're pretty, too :)

This is the Insect Forum!

The adult beetles feed on goldenrod pollen.

The larva, or grub, feeds under the bark of black locust trees.

And do quite a bit of damage to black locust trees!

Here is a link that might be useful: locust borers

Larry Gene - What with the !!!! "This is the Insect Forum!" ? Am I not welcome? I would have thought that Species: Megacyllene robiniae,Phylum - Arthropoda, Class - Insecta, Order - Coleoptera, and Family - Cerambycidae, constitutes an insect; one of which I had a query and one of which is perfectly pertient to this forum.
Do you think otherwise, as I rec'd no reprimand from the Webmasters of this site? BTW, all Solidago (Goldenrod)in this immediate area has not bloomed as of yet.
Regardless, I do thank the others for their help.
I have killed it and it is no more except in above photo.
Best,
PP

No, PP, he only said that because your last line of your original thread says "Anyway am also going to the insect forum to get more help, as well", and you were already posting in that forum :)

I personally don't agree with killing it just because the larvae feed on locusts. They are a native insect and there was no immediate or grand-scale danger of it being around....but alas, that is just my opinion.

Anyway, I happened to see on today on some goldenrod and I took a pic of it. It turned out really great. I hadn't seen one of these since college.

I'll rephrase--

This IS the Insect Forum!

Thanks, Amy.

Thank you both Larry Gene and Amy.
My apologies.
