Hello! as I left for work this morning.... (pic)

As I opened my car door, I simultaneously went "Whoa, hello!" as I realized the door was a rest stop for this guy/gal...

It's the first mantid I've seen in our small yard. Too bad it's a Chinese mantid. :( But I used the broomstick to gently lift him off the roof (where he'd run to by then, after I re-closed the door) and put him in my garden before leaving for work. Didn't want to drive down the road with him there :)

Nice mantis. My new house had a couple egg cases which I thought were current, however I haven't seen a mantid all year. I really wanted to show one to my son. Oh well.

We found other interesting animals, like pollywogs and water scorpions.

Thanks! I haven't seen it since. I'll have to look through my garden once more. I'd hate to forget about it and find it with my fingers *yow*

In Pennsylvania, I think the only other species I'd likely see is the small native Carolina mantid, but sadly I don't recall ever finding one of them (yet).

The University of Kentucky has some good website pages on mantids. And here is a good page on the species found in the U.S.:

Bugguide.net also has great pics.

Here is a link that might be useful: UVM mantids page
