Please help ID big flying digging insect

I saw a big flying bug today, about an inch longer then a hummingbird and about half an inch fat.It made petty loud flying sounds, like a hummingbird, just slower. It landed in one of my flowerbeds and I only caught a short look at it. It appeared to be metallic orange-yellow, maybe it had some black stripes. As i wanted to take a closer look it dissapeared and I discovered a big mount as you would see with ants, just that the dirt pieces where way bigger then you would see with ant mounts. The mount is still there, I could take a pic of it, but I'm WAY to scared to take a closer look. I live in Alabama, zone 8a
Thanks for your time

PS: I looked up hummingbird moths, and I don't think that's what it was
