Butterfly attack

Hi, I was visiting down in So. Calif. enjoying my Son's garden when I noticed a morning cloak butterfly flitting from here to there. A sparrow landed on the fence & was just hanging out when the butterfly took off over to the bird & seemed to attack it! It kept flying at the bird, (kinda like when you get too close to a mocking bird's nest, that's what it reminded me of) till the bird flew up to the telephone wire. The butterfly went up & kept flying at the bird till it flew away. The butterfly came back & resumed it's garden flitting till another sparrow came around & the butterfly did the same thing to it! I was amazed. When did butterflies start attacking other creatures? Peg

That's a cute story. Yes they can be very territorial. The monarchs are very good at this but even the skippers and painted ladies seem to do it. Last week I had a monarch chase after a small flock of sparrows. They quickly flew through the yard and the male monarch took off after them. They were totally oblivious of him but he chased them off and came back to his zinnia patch.

Admiral butterflies do this also, your cloak was likely a male. If it begins attacking you, please post again!

That is so cool! I had never heard of such behavior from butterflies before. :)
