A Mean Little Wasp

I felt something land on the back of my neck, so I swatted at it and it got tangled up in my hair. I finally managed to get it out, and it was a little black wasp, looking nothing like any I've seen. I'd guess he wasn't over a half-inch in length. Well, in the process, I got stung by the little booger, and it raised a big, marble-sized whelp on my neck. I did some on-line research on wasp stings and found that the stinger needed to be removed. (Needless to say, I couldn't see the lump.) A friend of mine was able to remove it, and now the lump is gone. I've never had such a bad reaction to a wasp sting before.

Would anyone know what kind of wasp it could be? We have big mean red wasps, dirt dobbers, yellow jackets, bumble bees, carpenter bees, etc. I've never seen a little black wasp that small before.

RE: A Mean Little Wasp

I thought only honey bees left their stingers in the victim.
