green flies attracted to acorns... why??

My husband on his daily walk came across some fallen Burr Oak acorns on the ground. He picked some up & took them home to the garage to try & plant some in some containers. He said IMMEDIATELY the garage & acorns were covered with those large green winged flies!! Wonder what was the sudden attraction & where did the flies came from as we had not seen any of them this summer before?! My husband thought they were the kind of flies that hovered over dead animals? Something in these fallen acorns in the garage immediately attracted these flies! Any thoughts as to the type of fly & the attraction of the acorns? The flies didn't seem to be on the oak tree itself or the acorns on the tree or on the ground when he picked them up.... only when he brought them home!

any chance of pictures? Sure would help us understand what you mean by "those large green winged flies."

sorry for my vague description... but they just looked like big houseflies but with green metalic wings. Couldn't get one to 'sit still' for a photo either. Just so curious as to why these flies appeared all of a sudden as soon as we brought the Burr Oak acorns into the garage. Seemed to appear in droves from nowhere & covered the acorns as we spread them on the workbench & left just as curiously as soon as we buried the acorns so we may never know what brought the flies in droves to them (the acorns were still in that fuzzy curious shell these walnuts have). I thought maybe the description of the fly might have been a clue.

I can't think of a fly with green metallic wings, but I can think of a green metallic fly with regular wings. Such as the blow fly (green bottle fly) your husband is thinking of.
