Tiger swallowtail. (not sure if it's eastern or western tiger.) Most likely ready to pupate.

Thank you Cindy! Now that I look at it I can see the markings are swallowtail. I did not realize that they turn brown before pupating? I live in northern california so it must be the western tiger swallowtail!

What a gorgeous creature!!! I hope to run into some critters like this everyday in the warm months- my eyes are always peeled to see them. Glad you found him-where 'bouts do you live?
