i just thought i should tell people about these wasps as i had never seen them until a few years ago. their orange and they build a paper nest or a nest in some leaves joined together. the yellow and black ones are about half the size. if you see any stay a big distance as they are very aggressive. i got stung when i went near their nest in a clump of grass i didnt know was there. i probably got stung about ten times so i ran about 30 meters inside and they were still stinging me. i had a swollen and sore foot for nearly a week. i hope saves someone else from being stung cause it hurts like hell.

Most Wasps are not at all aggressive.

So, your wasp must have been a social wasp in the Family Vespidae, maybe a Polistes species.

The European Paper wasp, for example, is known to have one of the most painful stings in the Polistes genus. However, they are not orange.

There are a couple of paper wasps with orange to red bodies.

Here in the Ozark Mountains we call those Red Wasp. I was cleaning my mom's yard when I was younger and picked up an old tire and as I was carrying it across the yard I suddenly felt like my legs were on fire, I looked down and there was about 8 to 10 of them with their stingers stuck through my pant legs and into my legs. I had to swat them off and run because there were more coming for me. They are just as aggressive as the Hornet and Yellow Jackets!

Australia is well known for having some pretty fierce critters! Don't know what kind of wasp (or hornet) you've come into contact with, but sure hope you keep it with YOU and don't send it to the US!
