Similar to our Spiny Orb Weaver (Gasteracantha cancriformis).

hrrm.. doesnt look like a spider at all. Does it jump around quickly? Looks kinda heavy and bulky! Definitely have not seen this spider before. Even in the documentaries!

I do believe that it IS a spiney orb weaver. One of my favorites!

This is indeed a Gasteracantha canceriformis, or Spiny Orb Weaver, which are very common in the late summer and fall in the Southeastern US. This is a female; the males are no larger than a Deer Tick, and even the females are usually only about the size of my pinkie fingernail! Sharon McKenzie
