 o
animal call at night?

I heard some sounds while standing outside and would like some help identifying the animal. I live in Ohio, and it is the middle of winter right now and i cannot figure out what the animal might be. The sound was a shrill, wooooeeeee woooooeeee. It It sounded like a bird call, but I could hear leaves crackling as the noise was being made. It is too cold for tree frogs (which is what came to mind originally) So if anyone has any idea what it might be please help me out! Thanks!

A red fox, maybe? It's mating season.
Here's a link to a video demo with fox calls...

Here is a link that might be useful: Red fox calls

We had great horned owls by our house and there was a field about 1 mile away, with telephone poles on the edge. These poles provided a great vantage point for the owls as they hunted varmints. Their call could easily travel a mile to our house on a cold, calm winter day.

Hope you folks don't mind if I chime in---was just passing through and couldn't help myself!

We have Screech Owls; some even stay through nesting season.
It's an eerie, decending warbling sound. Soft notes.

Our Great Horned Owls kinda sound like this---and can be quite loud in the night air!
WHOO-WHOO, WHOO-WHOO, ----WHOO-WHOO, WHOO-HA!

Usually, owls would be calling from roosts in trees, not on the ground---nothing like really confusing things is it?
Cheers--and good luck! Kathy
