Strange Mouse (no picture)

| I have been trapping mice in my Garden shed. About a month ago I caught a strange mouse. I didn't think much about it at the time, other than I had not seen one like it before, and I tossed the dead mouse into the woods. But since then I have wondered what kind of mouse it was. I have tried looking up mice images on the internet with no luck at all.
First, this is East Tennessee and all the mice I have seen/trapped have been the common grey type. This one was a little bigger and broader. It was reddish brown and had a wide black band down it's back. I remember I thought it a rather handsome mouse (for a mouse).
Any Ideas? |

| I don't know about the black band, but look up white-footed mouse. If not, look at voles. Either the Prairie or the woodland vole. |

| I would suggest White Footed or Deer Mouse. Possibly Golden Mouse. Understand that the grey mice are the ordinary House Mouse, and should be disposed of, but the brown or reddish mice are native, and some are actually endangered or of special concern. Their babies are gray, thus are easy to confuse with House Mouse. A nice Black Snake would fix your problem. |
