Can anyone help me identify this bird?

Two babys fell out of the nest. I didn't know if I should interfere or not. Will they survive the night? The nest looks beat up with one baby still in it. Too high to climb and get them back.

| Looks like baby herons. I would leave them alone. They leave the nest before they can fly, but the parents are still nearby, feeding them and teaching them how to fend for themselves, etc. |

Thank you Cindy. That is exactaly what they are. Unfortunatly they are running around in the street and one was run over by a car today. One is still hiding under a tree but keeps running out into the street to look up into the tree across the street at it's sibling. I sure hope he survives!! |

| Looks like a Green Heron fledgling to me. The posture (neck held high, with bill pointed upwards) is characteristic of an American Bittern as well, but the nest location and crest leads me to think Green Heron. Crazy to see something like this so close to a residential area. |

| It strikes the posture of an American bittern and the coloration is correct as well. Since it now has feathers with no down showing, coloration becomes closer to the adult bird. It appears ready to fledge so what you observe may be the fledging of the brood. Unless the parents were killed, they are nearby and keeeping watch. |
