 o
Critter den of some kind

Hi Folks! Haven't been around in a long time. I now live in east central Iowa.

SOMETHING has taken up residence a bit too close to my house for comfort. Until I can get a pict of this den, maybe you folks have ideas.

At the base of a large tree I came across what I thought at first saw a big pile of sand. Upon closer inspection I believe it is sawdust! From the tree's insides! There is a hole at the base and a large pile of dirt covered with this evenly-textured powdered wood.

If a badger did this, wouldn't the wood be shredded, rather than a fine powder? I must admit I was leery of getting close enough to see tracks. Had visions of some wild critter charging me. My hiking companion is a tough guy but no match for certain wild animals (neutered but macho orange tabby cat).

What could turn the inside of a seemingly healthy tree into powder, while piling dirt around? I do plan to get pics when I feel brave!

The hole is bigger today, close to maybe 10" wide. The powder is the consistency of flour. Still not brave (or is it stupid?) enough to get right up there and look for tracks. What do badger tracks look like, anyway?

The tree is about 3' diameter.

I got pics but not sure how to show them here.
